In Portugal, producing recycled paper is already an ancient history. In the beginning, it was made with textile residues and nowadays, it is manufactured with waste of used paper, recovered and compacted after sorting.
The urban solid residues, one of the main environmental problems at the moment, is being minimized and partially solved by the paper industry action, recycling most of the consumed paper.
Traditionally in Portugal, the recovery of used paper is equivalent to the European average, almost 55% of the consumed paper. In the last years it is possible to notice a less favorable evolution, comparing to Europe. This difference is caused by a greater awareness of the citizens of those countries and maintenance of the recycling capacity that not kept along with the consuming increase.
